Estimate learner time
Set how long learners might spend on each page, see totals in Learning Design, and include them in the assessment plan export.
Page time estimates help you and reviewers see how long learners might spend on teaching content. They do not gate progress or change how the course plays.
Set a page estimate
Section titled “Set a page estimate”- Open a page or quiz page on the canvas.
- In the inspector under Content, find Estimated time (minutes).
- Enter a whole number from 1 to 600, or leave the field empty to clear it. Press Enter or click away to save.
The placeholder Not set means the page has no author estimate yet. When the field is empty, a line under it shows About n min (estimated) from page content (about 200 words per minute of text plus about 1 minute per quiz question). Invalid values, such as 0, show an error and are not saved.
Read time in the outline
Section titled “Read time in the outline”When a page has an estimate, the course Outline shows it at the end of the row, for example 30 min, or ~6 min (est.) when the studio calculated it from content. Screen readers hear the time as part of the page name, for example “Introduction, about 30 min”.
See time on an objective
Section titled “See time on an objective”In Learning Design → Goals & objectives, select an objective. Under Taught on, Time on teaching pages sums the estimates on every visible teaching page linked to that objective. It appears only when that total is greater than zero.
Each page is counted once in the course total even when it teaches several objectives.
Course total in Alignment
Section titled “Course total in Alignment”On the Alignment tab, under Export assessment plan, Estimated learner time shows the sum of the times you set on visible, non-chapter pages and how many pages have one, for example Estimated learner time: 1 h 15 min (3 of 5 pages). Content-based estimates are not included there; only the values you enter count toward the course total.
The same totals appear in the assessment plan export (Markdown and CSV bundle).
The inspector’s Course settings shows a separate Estimated learner time total. It uses your page estimates where set and content-based estimates for the remaining visible pages. The label says estimated or rest estimated when it includes those calculated values, so it can differ from the authored-time total in Alignment.
